At Lipmatic, we're all about girl power. Fifteen year-old Yara Shahidi, actress and cousin of Lipmatic founder Destiny Jones, is the epitome of the term. At her tender age she has already racked up quite the resume, including her award-winning role on the ABC sitcom "Black-ish" where she co-stars with Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson.
Destiny wanted to kick off an ongoing celebration of fabulous females with her cousin, called "Lipmatic Loves," so we caught up with Yara about her career and snapped some pics of the gorgeous teen rocking one of our new shades: "Sunrise in Harlem."
Lipmatic: What helped you stay disciplined as a child actor?
Yara: Well, ever since I was little, my parents made sure that I was involved in activities like Karate, traveling, reading and art. I was like any other kid, and acting was just another thing I loved to do.
Lipmatic: What advice would you offer budding child actors?
Yara: I would say get involved in any and every acting opportunity that comes your way, as long as you love the project and it doesn’t involve compromising your morals or ethics. It’s through practice and life experiences that I’m continuously mastering my craft.
Lipmatic: Who is someone you look up to?
Yara: Dana Owens (aka Queen Latifah!) It’s empowering as a young actress to see a woman doing it all! She’s not only an amazing singer, rapper and actress, but also an entrepreneur who makes things happen for herself.
Lipmatic: If you weren't an actress, what career could you see yourself having?
Yara: I have ten million career ideas and I keep adding new ones every day. I would love to be a history professor, or work on the creative side of advertisement. Perhaps even get a masters in Social Justice and help make a change in our world.
Lipmatic: Random fact most people don't know about you?
Yara: I have the largest collection of music and it covers every genre known to man! I have some old school hip hop, Columbian folk music, a ridiculous amount of alternative music and of course no playlist is complete without boy bands (my favorite is NSYNC).
Lipmatic: What essentials are in your bag right now?
Yara: I always carry face cleanser with me to wipe off my makeup after a day of work. My skin is sensitive and I’m only 15, so I keep a fresh face whenever I can. I also have about a billion lip glosses, and when I’m not wearing makeup, I still like to play around with new lip colors (yay LIPMATIC!) Finally, I carry a mouth wash. I am a hard-core foodie and probably eat some sort of smelly food every day - I would rather not be known on set as the girl with funky breath (laughs).
